How To Get Free Housing From The Government

Free housing is available to some individuals and families who have zero income, and no money or assets in their name. Free housing is part of the U.S. government’s affordable housing program, which is overseen by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

It’s not easy to get free housing, but if you are really struggling, you might qualify. For example, if you don’t have a job, and you cannot pay for things like food, rent, or essential items, you might qualify for free housing.

In this post, you will learn about how to get free housing and what types of programs are available.

Does Free Housing Really Exist?

Yes. But only if you have no money and no income. If that’s your situation, it is possible to have your entire rent payment covered by the Housing Choice Voucher Program (also called Section 8 housing), or through your state’s Public Housing Program.

How Does Free Housing Work?

Free housing is only available to the poorest individuals and families. To see if you qualify, you first have to apply through your local Public Housing Authority. Unfortunately, it can be a little tricky to find the contact information of the agency nearest to you. But don’t worry, we will walk you through the process.

First, click the state where you live on this map. If you live in Los Angeles, for example, you would click on the State of California (CA). Then, you will see a list of housing authority contacts for each city and county within California (which is a very long list).

For Los Angeles, you will want to contact the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) at (626) 586-1500 or send an email to [email protected]. You can also learn more about this agency by visiting their website.

How To Apply For Free Housing

Once you have found the right website to apply at, you will want to get started with the online application process. Using LACDA as an example, you would click on “Click Here to Get Started” underneath the Housing Programs section.

At the time of this writing, it appears that the waiting list for LACDA’s Section 8 housing program is currently closed. Their waiting list for family public housing is also closed. If you live in Los Angeles and need housing support soon, we strongly recommend giving the LACDA a call at (800) 731-4663.

Other states, counties, and cities will have different housing availability and eligibility requirements. If you are unable to find the right agency in your area, don’t be afraid to give them a call and ask for help. There are a tremendous number of resources available to people and families in need. Sometimes, you just need to know where to look, or who to ask.
